Welcome to Balance Street Health Centre.
In the departure of Dr Seddon in November 2018 we are having to change the way we work at Balance Street Practice as there is a National shortage of GPs. We have a small pool of regular locum GPs to ensure continuity as best as possible. Our Reception team will be asking the reason for your call, this is to direct you to the best and most appropriate care. We kindly ask patients to bear with us as this difficult time.
Many Thanks from the Partners & Staff at Balance Street Practice.
Our next Staff Training Day is 12th June 2019. The practice will close from 1:30. Dispensary will be closed from 1:30-4:30.
**NEW** Our practice is involved with a new Living Well program - please check back soon for more information under "clinics & services"
Our practice nurses provide advice on family planning and perform Cervical Cytology (Smears). If you are female between 25 and 65 then it is strongly recommended that you have a regular cervical smear test. This test makes it possible to detect and treat the early stages of abnormalities of the cervix before they have a chance to become apparent to you.
Patients are advised to make an appointment to see the practice nurse about halfway between periods.
Childhood immunisations are given at 2, 3 and 4 months, to protect small babies from whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, polio, HIB meningitis and meningococcal meningitis C. Booster immunisation is also offered to pre-school and 15 year old children. Patients will be notified when immunisations are due and advised to make an appointment with the practice nurse.
Balance Street Health Centre is able to provide minor surgery clinics for the removal of minor skin lesions or cysts. Patients must discuss this with their doctor prior to arranging an appointment to assess whether or not any skin lesion or cyst would be suitable for removal at the practice.
Balance Street Health Centre is able to provide joint injections for various conditions. Patients must discuss this with their doctor prior to arranging an appointment to assess whether or not an injection would be suitable at the practice.
Clinics are available each morning with our healthcare assistants and phlebotomist for all your blood tests.
Asthma & COPD
Balance Street Health Centre offers education and check-ups to help control Asthma and COPD.
Healthy Heart Clinic
Appointments are offered to all patients with heart disease, or who have had a heart attack. Patients are required to attend for a blood test with the nurse, 2 weeks before their appointment.
Patients with hypertension (raised blood pressure) will be invited by letter to attend our hypertension clinic. These are run at various times during the week by our practice nurses and patient’s blood pressure and medication will be checked.
Appointments will be offered to all patients with diabetes. Patients are required to attend for a blood test with the nurse, 2 weeks before their appointment. This will ensure results are back in time for your appointment. Clinics run three times a week at various times for your convenience.
Travel Advice and Vaccinations
We recommend patients contact the surgery at least 8 weeks before your departure date to ensure sufficient time is available to receive all vaccinations required. Some travel vaccinations will incur a cost as these are non-NHS services. Patients are advised to contact the surgery to enquire about current costs.
We are also a Yellow Fever centre and able to offer this vaccination to patients registered with our practice and registered at an alternative practice.
Easysnip is the vasectomy clinic here at Balance Street Health Centre. We perform the largest number of Vasectomies in Staffordshire and have been doing so for over 30 years.
As recommended by the Royal Collage of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, we provide No-Scalpel Vasectomies – the safe keyhole method with a fast recovery rate and no stitches.
Vasectomies are performed by Dr Peter Trewin and Dr Owen Barron weekly. Patients are required to attend to discuss the operation in detail and sign consent forms prior to the procedure being undertaken.
Further details can be obtained from our website http://www.easysnip.com/
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.
There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

Online Patient Access- Information leaflet
Key Considerations for online access
Considerations/Approval of Access
The practice will not approve on-line access to detailed coded information if it is deemed that it may cause physical and/or mental harm the patient.
ID verification is required to ensure access is granted to patients/proxy users that have a legitimate reason to access a record. This will prevent access being granted to the wrong person and support the practice to adhere to information security guidelines. There are a number of options for identification verification including:
As is current practice, should there be a request for Online Access, two forms of documentation must be provided as evidence of identity, one of which must contain a photograph. Acceptable documents include passports, photo driving licences and bank statements.
If patients request access to their detailed coded information they will be notified that it may take the practice up to 14 days to review their application and grant access if appropriate. This is a guide only and in some circumstances may take longer.
At any point the practice can revoke Online Access to patients if the functionality is abused.
The NHS is developing the concept of social prescribing in order to help patients to improve their health, wellbeing and social welfare by connecting them to community services, which are run by councils or local charities. Here at Balance Street Surgery, we are enthusiastic about this new initiative; indeed, we are ahead of the game!
We recently trialled a FREE 12 week ‘Living Well Programme’ that each week combined a seated exercise class with an informative talk. Hosted and coordinated by the team at Uttoxeter Cares Centre on Holly Road, each session was attended by up to 12 patients at a time. It proved to be a big success and was extremely popular for all those who attended the course which finished in December last year.
The seated exercise classes are run by a professional trainer from the Burton Albion Community team. Between the seated exercise and informative talks, refreshments will be provided by Tesco.
The programme will help you to improve your independence, help you stay as active as possible and offer the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and share experiences.
The next FREE course will start on 9th May 2019 and will run 10am until 12noon at the Uttoxeter Cares Centre on Holly Road.
